Join artist Silvana McLean in this one day workshop exploring how to make handmade artists’ books. These artworks create an impression much greater than their size suggests.

Using the basic book structure of a pamphlet book on a theme ofseasonal change, you will try out different techniques of creating content using inclusions, cut-outs, collage and printing. Various specialist papers will be available to encourage individual expression and creativity.

The workshop costs £60 and includes refreshments and lunch. To book: please call: 01848 331 553 or please email us

What to bring:

Please bring items of personal significance to include in your books. These could be poems or song lyrics, tickets to a particular destination, map coordinates etc. Other suggested items are old maps, dried plants, old envelopes and other paper related materials (old etchings or other prints which can be cut up if you don’t mind using them).

Scissors, craft knife and fine line pen are also useful. All other specialist papers and materials will be provided.

The National Library of Scotland has collected several of Silvana’s books as part of their Contemporary Scottish Collection. In 2001 she created a page for The Great Book of Gaelic with artists and poets from Scotland and Ireland. In 2007 A portfolio of etchings and poems was created with the writer and poet Mary Smith’ Voices from Glentrool and Merrick’. Work is also included in The Scottish poetry Library and Gracefield permanent Collection.
